Introducción

El pasado simple del verbo «To be» (ser o estar, en español) se conjuga simplemente cambiando las formas «am» e «is» por «was» y «are» por «were».  Siendo así mucho más fácil y rápido al momento de expresar ideas u oraciones que toman lugar en el pasado.

Conjugación

Pronombre	To Be in past	Ser / Estar en pasado

It (Eso)	was	era / estaba

¿Cómo usarlo?

A continuación presentamos ejemplos de oraciones donde vemos como se usa el verbo to be en pasado explicado en la tabla anterior y su traducción equivalente:

·         I was in my house / Yo estaba en mi casa

·         She was a student last year / Ella era un estudiante el año pasado

·         He was with my mom that day / Él estaba con mi mamá ese día

·         You were in USA last weekend / Tú estabas en EEUU el fin de semana pasado

·         You were a policeman / Tú eras un policía

·         He was your boss / Él era tu jefe

·         He was in my office / Él estaba en mi oficina

·         She was with you / Ella estaba contigo

·         She was at the mall that night / Ella estaba en el centro comercial esa noche

·         It was very beautiful / Era muy bonito

·         It was so green / (Eso) Era tan verde

·         We were like family / Nosotros éramos como familia

·         We were three in the room / Nosotros éramos 3 en el cuarto

·         They were good people / Ellos eran buenas personas

·         They were at the game / Ellos estaban en el partido

·          

El verbo to be mantiene dichas conjugaciones para su forma negativa e interrogativa, ya que a excepción de los otros verbos en inglés, este no usa el auxiliar “did” para su conjugación en pasado, pues se usa a sí mismo como forma interrogativa o negativa.

Negación

Puede usarse sin contracción (Was not / Were not) o con contracción (Wasn’t / Weren’t). 

Sin embargo las contracciones se usan generalmente en conversaciones o textos informales, no es correcto usarlas en comunicados formales. 

Por ejemplo: 

·         I was not a student / Yo no era un estudiante.

·         You were not there / Tú no estabas allá.

·         He was not happy / Él no era feliz.

·         She wasn’t sad / Ella no estaba triste.

·         We were not with you / Nosotros no estábamos contigo. 

·         They weren’t with me  / Ellos no estaban conmigo.

Interrogación

Cambia la estructura de la oración comenzando con el verbo seguido del pronombre personal al cual corresponde la conjugación.

Por  ejemplo: 

·         Was I in the kitchen? / ¿Estaba yo en la cocina?

·         Were you happy? / ¿Eras feliz?

·         Was he a teacher? / ¿Era él un profesor?

·         Was she in the park? / ¿Estaba ella en el parque?

·         Were we friends? / ¿Éramos amigos?

·         Were they enemies?  / ¿Eran enemigos?

6 - use the Past Continuous to express: USAMOS EL PASADO CONTINUO PARA EXPRESAR :

a)      Actions in progress at a moment in the past.

E.g.: last night at 9 o’clock I was reading a book.

 EJ- La noche pasado a las 9.00 yo estaba leyendo un libro.

b)     Describing a scene.

DESCRIBIR UNA ESCENA.

E.g: It was an awful morning. It was raining heavily and the wind was blowing.

EJ. Era una mañana horrible. Estaba lloviendoy el viento estaba soplando.

c)      Actions happening at the same time in the past.

ACCIONES SUCEDIENDO ALMISMO TIEMPO EN PASADO.

              E.g.: My mother was cooking WHILE  I was reading a book.

                LA BREVE EXPLICACIÓN COMO SOPORTE DE LO OBSERVADO EN EL VIDEO.

El Pasado Simple es un tiempo verbal que se utiliza para describir acciones que han sucedido en un tiempo anterior y que ya han finalizado, por ejemplo:

She cleaned her house.                Ella limpió su casa.
I broke the window.                       Yo rompí la ventana.

They saw the movie last night.      Ellos vieron la película anoche.
We went to Salta  yesterday.      Nosotros fuimos a Salta ayer.

Para poder formar una oración en tiempo pasado debemos distinguir dos tipos: VERBOS REGULARES   forman su Pasado añadiendo la terminación ED al infinitivo,     y VERBOS IRREGULARES  reciben ese nombre por no seguir un patrón determinado y en este caso deben estudiarse individualmente.

EXPRESIONES DE TIEMPO EN PASADO

Veamos unos ejemplos con cada una de las expresiones temporales:

- Yesterday, I went to the beach with my friend Aly because it the sun was shinning.
- Ayer fui a la playa con mi amiga Aly porque brillaba el sol.

- The other day Peter came over and we had a chat about our trip to Paris.
- El otro día, Peter se pasó por casa y charlamos sobre nuestro viaje a París.

- Last week, the teacher explained us the use and form of the past simple.
- La semana pasada, la profesora nos explicó el uso y formación del pasado simple. ¡Ahora está todo muy claro!

- Last month, I went to The Script concert.
- El mes pasado fui al concierto de The Script.

- Last year, the museum  showed a great exhibition about the Baroque painting.
- El año pasado, el museo  mostro una gran exposición sobre la pintura Barroca.

- We started our friendship when we were in college.
- Nosotros empezamos nuestra amistad cuando estábamos en la universidad.

- I worked in that bakery two years ago and I loved it. I learned how to bake a delicious bread.
- Trabajé en esa panadería hace dos años y me encantó. Aprendí como hacer un pan delicioso.

- I moved to Germany in 2001.
- Me mudé a Alemania en 2001.
